Oregon pear brandy includes dry, unaged pear spirits from Clear Creek and New Deal. Often called eau-de-vie, these capture pear aroma without the sweetness you would expect from a pear liqueur. Clear Creek also lists a whole-pear-in-bottle version.
Pear eau-de-vie or pear liqueur?
Pear eau-de-vie is distilled from fermented pears. The clear, dry examples here are unaged. Pear liqueur is a sweetened spirit: the TTB's spirits guide distinguishes liqueurs by their flavouring and sugar content. Check which a recipe specifies before substituting one for the other.
Oregon bottles to compare
- Clear Creek Pear Brandy — Hood River. Part of the producer's dry, unaged fruit-brandy range. Its official portfolio lists Pear Brandy, Pear in Bottle and Pear Liqueur separately. Check the exact product name when ordering.
- New Deal Pear Brandy — Portland. Made entirely from Bartlett pears grown at Pereday Orchard in Hood River. The full production process takes place in Portland. This unaged eau-de-vie is bottled at 40% ABV; see New Deal's product details.
How does the pear get inside the bottle?
The pear grows there. Clear Creek places a bottle over a small developing pear while it is still attached to the tree. After harvest, the bottle and fruit are cleaned and filled with pear brandy. The distiller explains the process in this orchard interview. A whole pear inside the bottle does not make it a pear liqueur.
